Ole, son of Jul and Marie (Simonson) Sundheim, was born on March 11, 1907 on the homestead on One Road Township, Roberts County, Sisseton, S.D. Ole completed the third grade of school, then his Dad needed him to help on the farm, thus, beginning his life as a farmer. In 1924, he came to Montana at the age of 17, spending his summers, returning to South Dakota for winter work. In 1928, he met his bride-to-be while working for his sister in Minnesota. He worked for Peter Lyngen, falling in love with Peter's daughter, Alvina. They were married on Feb. 8, 1931, in Watson, Minn. After their marriage they moved to Homestead, where they both worked for the Schnitzler Corporation. In 1941, Ole and Alvina purchased the Golden Valley Farm, west of Fairview. They remained on the "homeplace" until 1972, when they moved 11/2 miles east to semi-retire. Alvina died in September, 1995. Ole moved to the Crestwood Inn in October of 1997 to spend the winter. In May, due to illness, he moved to Home Sweet Home, where he died surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, June 21, 1998.
Ole was a self-made man, he built a farming and ranching operation he was proud of. He taught his children to care for the land and the land will take care of you.
Ole taught his grandchildren that if it doesn't move, paint it. If they didn't have John Deere green or yellow on their jeans, they weren't working hard enough. He taught them respect, and that working was hard but it could be fun, too. Living through the Depression he taught his children and grandchildren never to waste or throw anything away, it may be needed someday and you can fix almost anything, with barb wire and duct tape!
Ole was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Fairview, Sons of Norway, Lifetime member of the Moose Lodge.
Ole loved his horses, buggies, wagons, with which he entertained his grandchildren, and much to their delight, fishing, car racing, baseball, in his younger years, Fairview's Old Timers Festival, his farming, cattle and his children.
Ole is survived by his sons, JuDean and (Patty), Orion and (Elma), Robert (Renee), Jimmy (Sharon), and Gerald "Jerry" and (G'Nell) all of Fairview; and daughter, Delores and (Louie) Frison of Sidney; brothers, Arnold (Joye), of Cannon Falls, Minn., Noel (Bertha) of Williston, N.D., and Marvin (Grace) of Froid; sister, Esther Rued of Froid and sister-in-law, Bertha Sundheim of Sioux Pass; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alvina; his parents, Jul and Marie Sundheim; three sisters, Rose, Ida, Inga; four brothers, Edwin, Julius, Oscar and Iver.
